The State Bar of Texas will host an Entertainment Law Institute on Thursday and Friday, October 1 and 2 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 208 Barton Springs Road in Austin.
The sessions will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. on Thursday and from 8:30 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. on Friday.
Topics to be covered include mobile entertainment, recording contracts in a 360 world, 20 questions for your new band client, the music publishing box and how to think outside it, and protecting the artist in record company proceedings.
A roundup of recent court decisions will be presented by Stan Soocher, editor-in-chief of Entertainment Law & Finance and associate professor of Music & Entertainment Studies at the University of Colorado in Denver. Mr. Soocher will also moderate a review of recent legislation and related issues with panelists Jay Rosenthal, senior vice president & general counsel of the National Music Publishers' Association and John L. Simson, executive director of SoundExchange. Other topics include Copyright 101, "I Won't Back Down" - Protecting the Artist in Record Company Bankruptcy Proceedings, and the Texas Star Award Presentation, which is posthumously honoring Shannon Jones, Jr.,founding partner of Passman & Jones and founder of the first Entertainment Law and Study Group at the Dallas Bar Association.
