San Francisco Seminar Explains Accounting Basics For Lawyers

On Thursday and Friday, July 22 and 23, the Practising Law Institute will offer Basics of Accounting for Lawyers 2010: What Every Practicing Lawyer Needs to Know.

It will run from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on day one and from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. day two at the PLI California Center, 685 Market Street in San Francisco.

The program is designed for all attorneys and paralegals, both in-house and external, who work with financial information related to ongoing business activities, litigation and transactional work. It is a practical course for the non-accountant attorney who needs to understand the key principles of accounting with real-life examples of accounting issues attorneys face.

Attendees will gain an understanding of GAAP and GAAS and the accounting cycle, including the balance sheet, the income statement and the statement of cash flows. They will learn the importance of the notes to the financial statements and how lawyers can effectively use accountants as experts, the focus of current regulatory enforcement actions and ethical issues.

Among the faculty are Michele Kyrouz, Latham & Watkins LLP, Robert S. Leach, assistant regional director, U.S. SEC, and Moji Saniefar, Orrick Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP.
