The NewYork State Bar Association has scheduled a series of programs titled Accounting for Lawyers and What Part Did Accounting Play in the Current Financial Meltdown. It will be held on the following dates in the following locations: Wednesday, December 3, at the New Yorker Hotel in NYC; Monday, December 8, at the Marriott Long Island Hotel in Melville, NY; and on Thursday, December 11 at the Holiday Inn at the Rochester Airport, NY. The times of the sessions are the same on each day with registration at 8:30 a.m. and the program from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.
A faculty of experts has been assembled in each location by the planning co-chairs, William F Chandler, Managing Director, Spectrum Consulting Partners, LLC and David L. Evans, Office of David L. Evans.
The program will include an evaluation of the role accounting has played in the current meltdown of our financial institutions: Did mark-to-market accounting (where certain assets are reported at their market values rather than historical cost) contribute to the program or simply report it? Do the accounting rules for Special Purpose Entities ("SPEs") allow companies to avoid transparency in risky transactions?
Also, by highlighting the responsibilities and duties Sarbanes-Oxley and the "bailout/rescue" plan (the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008) place on lawyers, accountants and company officials, the panelists will explore the importance of the role of the counsel.
