NYCLA Roundtable Discussion On New York Wage Theft Prevention Act

NYCLA's Labor & Employment Committee is hosting a special event on Friday, April 8 at 6:00 p.m., featuring New York State Senator Diane J. Savino and New York State Assemblyman Carl Heastie discussing the New York Wage Theft Protection Act, which expands workers' rights to seek civil redress from their employers for failure to comply with the New York State Labor Law. The event will be held at New York Law School, 185 West Broadway, in Room W402.

The recently enacted Wage Theft Protection Act creates significant changes for employers, which include schools, in the creation of job appointment letters, offer letters generally and the retention of employee records. It also creates significant financial penalties for failure to comply with the new rules.

State Senator Savino, who represents Staten Island and Southeast Brooklyn, was the prime sponsor of this legislation in the senate, and Assemblyman Heastie, who represents various sections of Brooklyn and the Northeast Bronx, was a major proponent of this Act in the assembly.
