The North Carolina Bar Association Foundation Endowment is the philanthropic workhorse of the NCBA Foundation and the NCBA. Since 1988, 462 endowment grants totaling more than $3.5 million have been awarded.
But where does this money go, and who benefits from the generosity of North Carolina lawyers?
For the grant period from January-June 2011, beneficiaries range from the Center on Actual Innocence, which advocates for wrongly convicted victims, to law student interns who will help poor people across N.C. in legal aid offices over the summer. Several educational projects also will help students and teachers learn more about our system of government through the bar's Law-Related Education program.
Other programs receiving NCBA grants are Legal Aid of North Carolina awarded $18,000;Student Loan Repayment Assistance Program awarded $14,909; LawHelp/Probono Statewide Websites awarded $10,000; the Children's Law Center awarded $15,000; and Elder Law Clinic at WFU School of Law - Client Needs Fundawarded $2,000.
