The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) has named the law department of Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company as its 2012 Employer of Choice Award winner for the Midwest Region. Nationwide was selected from law department applicants of corporations across the Midwest for demonstrating a commitment to diversity and creating and maintaining an inclusive workplace. The company will be recognized at MCCA’s Diversity Honors Gala in September.
MCCA’s selection committee notes that Nationwide’s commitment to diversity touches every aspect of its law department. The Diversity and Inclusion Council considers issues and makes recommendations that are implemented department-wide. The Diversity Coaching Program pairs “coaches” with senior leaders to help them apply diversity and inclusion to business issues. As a signatory of “A Call to Action -- Diversity in the Legal Profession,” Nationwide supports diversity in the legal profession and selects and works with law firms that share this commitment.
“Nationwide’s legal department seeks to view its business through the lens of diversity and inclusion,” said Joseph K. West, MCCA’s president and CEO. “This mindset impacts the ways Nationwide recruits and mentors minority attorneys, how they conduct their daily work, and how they select outside law firms. By first ‘setting their own house in order,’ they now serve as a role model for the wider legal community. Nationwide has truly earned the title of Employer of Choice.”
“Nationwide’s Legal and Governance Office is pleased to accept this honor from the Minority Corporate Counsel Association,” commented Pat Hatler, chief legal officer.
Nationwide and four other regional winners will be honored at MCCA’s Diversity Honors Gala at the Lincoln Center in New York City on September 11.
