Lunchtime Seminar Explores Hot Topics In Copyright Law

Hot Topics in Copyright Law is the title of an upcoming luncheon seminar sponsored by the Bar Association of San Francisco on Wednesday, September 28.

It will run from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the BASF Conference Center, 301 Battery Street in San Francisco.

The two cases being discussed, Golan v. Holder and Vernor v. Autodesk, have far-reaching implications for the future of copyright cases. In Golan, the Supreme Court will consider the constitutionality of Congress's decision to restore copyright to millions of foreign works that have long been in the U.S. public domain. The Vernor case asks a seemingly simple question: if you bought it, do you own it? Autodesk is arguing that Vernor committed copyright infringement when he bought a lawfully made copy of software at a garage sale and resold it on eBay. The Ninth Circuit agreed, though a petition for certiorari is pending.

The speakers are Joseph Gratz, a partner at Durie Tangri LLP and counsel for Augusto in UMG Recordings v. Augusto, and Daniel Nazer of the Stanford Law School Center for Internet and Society and counsel for Golan in Golan v. Holder.
