On Wednesday, November 2, Jones Day is offering a speaker series titled Out Front on IP Issues: Dealing with Patent Trolls and a Look at Patent Disputes in China.
The event begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 10:00 a.m. at the offices of Jones Day, 500 Grant Street in Pittsburgh.
Companies marketing their inventions frequently have to deal with lawsuits filed by non-practicing entities - companies that own the rights to a patent but do not engage in the production or licensing of the covered invention. Jones Day partners David Witcoff and David Maiorana will discuss how to address suits by non-practicing entities, otherwise known as "patent trolls."
Also, in the last decade, China has experienced explosive growth in the field of intellectual property, particularly in the field of patent law. Patent filings in China quadrupled between 2002 and 2009, and civil actions for infringement or invalidation rose at an even faster pace. Jones Day IP partners Tony Chen and David Cochran will focus on the important aspects of patent law and practice in China, including the sharp growth in the number of civil IP cases, as well as issues related to jurisdiction and venue, evidence rules, defenses, remedies and winning strategies.
