On Wednesday, December 9, the DC Bar presents a CLE event titled the Basics of Filing and Litigating Freedom of Information Act Requests. The session will be held at the DC Bar Conference Center located at 1101 K Street NW and runs from 6:00 through 9:15 p.m.
Participants will learn how to administratively file requests under the federal Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), as well as gain insights into the issues that arise in FOIA litigation from the different perspectives of the lawyers for defendant-agency and for the plaintiff-requestor. A discussion of how to frame and pursue FOIA requests before different federal agencies as well as an update on the new FOIA guidelines issued by the U.S. Office of the Attorney General will be reviewed. FOIA litigation is highly specialized and attendees will learn the skills to litigate these types of cases before the district courts. The seminar will finish with a brief discussion of Privacy Act requests and touch on the areas of litigation arising from such requests.
The presenters are Elizabeth Shapiro of the U.S. Department of Justice and Mark Zaid of Mark S. Zaid, PC.
