The American Law Institute-American Bar Association presents a topical seminar examining the Criminal Enforcement of Environmental Laws.The program is on Thursday, September 23, at the offices of Venable LLC located at 575 7th Street, NW in Washington, DC. The sessions begin at 7:45 a.m. and adjourn at 5:00 p.m.
This one-day course of study will provide attendees with a comprehensive discussion of environmental crimes in the country. The faculty includes both government attorneys and private practitioners who will analyze how cases are brought and offer insights on how lawyers and in-house counsel can best serve their clients at various stages of proceedings from internal investigation to trial and post-trial.
The morning session will be a discussion of what can be learned from past environmental disasters; the 1989 Exxon Valdez; the 1999 Erika tanker spill off the French Brittany coast and subsequent prosecution of individuals and corporations, and the implications for the recent Upper Big Branch Mine and the BP Gulf Coast disasters.
The program also features two keynote addresses: one from Cynthia Giles, assistant administrator in the office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance at the EPA and another address from John Cruden, deputy assistant attorney general in the Department of Justice's Environment and Natural Resources Division.
Other speakers include Joseph G. Block and Judson W. Starr of Venable LLP; Stacey H. Mitchell, chief, Environmental Crimes Section, Environment and Natural Resources Division, U.S. Department of Justice;and David S. Krakoff of Mayer Brown LLP.
