The Association of Corporate Counsel's Westchester/Southern Connecticut Chapter will present a program on Wednesday, July 14, focusing on employment law. The topic of the seminar is Independent Contractor Status: Radar on Misclassifications - Don't Run Afoul of the Regulations.
The discussion will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 12:30 p.m. and will be located at the offices of Blythe Inc. at One Weaver Street in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Practitioners and corporate counsel who deal with employment law are aware that several states, including Connecticut and New York, have established task forces of state agencies to target misclassification of employees as independent contractors. There are also other risks in that the IRS is now intensifying reviews of incidents of misclassification by employers.
The speakers will review critical concerns to employers in an interactive format. The topics review what steps the federal and state agencies are taking to prevent employers from misclassifying workers as independent contractors; what constitutes an employee v. an independent contractor; what are the potential penalties and other risks employers may face; how to limit liability in a misclassification action; and the lawful use of volunteers and unpaid interns.
The program speakers are Ray Casella and Shari Goodstein, partners in the firm of Shipman & Goodwin LLP.
