On Thursday, July 29, Professor Helen Norton, University of Colorado School of Law, will explore The Role of Unconscious Bias in Your Legal Practice as part of the Colorado Campaign for Inclusive Excellence summer CLE series.
The event will run from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. at the offices of White and Steele PC, 600 17th Street, Suite 600 N in Denver. Professor Norton will explain an emerging body of behavioral research that demonstrates how humans rely heavily on stereotypes as mental shortcuts and to make sense of the world around us. According to the research, people of all races often unconsciously use stereotypes and automatically sort people into categories, with ascribed meanings that shape interactions with those individuals. This CLE will explain the real-world consequences of using stereotypes and identify possible workplace strategies for addressing such unconscious discrimination.
Professor Norton focuses on constitutional law, civil rights and employment discrimination law. She holds a J.D. from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley.
