American Law Institute To Hold Annual Meeting In San Francisco

The American Law Institute will hold its annual meeting Monday through Wednesday, May 16 to 18, at the Westin St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. Monday morning and adjourn at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, with premeeting events planned for Wednesday from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.

The meeting will open with remarks by Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, president of The Supreme Court of the UK, and by Steven N. Zack, president of the ABA. A new members luncheon is scheduled at 12:30, and a members reception will run from 6:30 to 8:30 on Monday evening at the Asian Art Museum.

On Tuesday, a luncheon honoring 2011 life (25-year) and 50-year members is planned with The Honorable Tani Cantil-Sakauye, chief justice of the Supreme Court of California, speaking. The annual reception and dinner featuring speaker Mark G. Yudof, president of the University of California, will begin at 7:00 p.m.

On Wednesday, professors Oren Bar-Gill, professor of law, NYU School of Law, and Jeanne C. Fromer, Fordham Law, will be given ALI's Young Scholars Medal, and Mr. Bar-Gill will discuss Consumer Psychology and Consumer Protection - Credit Cards, Mortgages and Beyond. They will be followed by the luncheon speaker, Kathleen M. Sullivan, partner at Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan and professor and former dean of Stanford Law School.

ALI along withABA will offer a CLE session on Wednesday afternoon titled Developments in Legal Ethics: The Lawyer's Duty to Protect: Confidentiality, Privilege, and Work Product. Using a lively, scenario-based format, panelists Henry S. Bryans, Aon Risk Services, Inc., and Hon. Elizabeth S. Stong, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge, Eastern District of New York, will examine the scope and limitations of client confidentiality, the attorney-client privilege, and the work product immunity doctrine. They will also explore the similarities and differences between exceptions to confidentiality, the privilege and the work product doctrine.
